Telmisartan Modestly Reduces Major Cardiovascular Events In Patients Unable To Tolerate Ace Inhibitors (Transcend Study)

The angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) telmisartan should be regarded as a potential intervention for vascular disease or high-risk diabetes, in the 20% of patients world Health Organization are ineffectual to permit the standard treatment of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. These ar the conclusions of the TRANSCEND study, published in an Article early Online and in an upcoming edition of The Lancet, which is being presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting in Munich and is authored by Dr Salim Yusuf, Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

This randomised controlled trial analysed 5926 patients with vascular disease or high risk diabetes and taking other proven therapies, of whom 2954 received telmisartan 80 mg/day and 2972 received placebo. The primary termination of the trial was a combination of cardiovascular death, mettle attack, chance event, or hospitalization for heart failure. Patients were followed-up for a median of 56 months.

The researchers found that mean blood pressure was lower in the telmisartan group than placebo by 40/22 mm Hg. The primary final result was experient by 465 (157%) patients given telmisartan compared with 504 (170%) in the placebo radical, although the benefit for telmisartan was not statistically significant. One of the secondary outcomes-a combination of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke-occurred in 384 (130%) of patients on telmisartan compared with 440 (148%) on placebo-a congener risk reduction of 13% for telmisartan patients, although this finding was of borderline statistical significance. A lower proportion of telmisartan patients (894/303%) were hospitalised for cardiovascular reasons than in the placebo grouping (980/330%): this result was statistically significant. Finally, fewer patients permanently discontinued medication in the telmisartan chemical group (639/216%) than in the placebo group (705/238%) (boundary line statistical implication). The virtually common reason for permanent discontinuation was symptoms of low rip pressure (hypotension) in both groups.

The authors close: "These information suggest that telmisartan confers a lowly benefit when added to other proved therapies. In view of the drug's tolerability and effects on cardiovascular endpoints, telmisartan could be regarded as a potential treatment for patients with vascular disease or high-risk diabetes, if they are unable to tolerate an ACE inhibitor."

In an accompanying Comment, Dr Toni L Ripley and Dr Donald Harrison, University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, Oklahoma City, OK, USA, say: "ARBs that have been studied in coronary disease are safe, but possibly less efficient alternatives in patients with intolerance to ACE inhibitors. Although data are excessively limited to reach classical conclusions, the clinical force of ARBs seems less robust than that of ACE inhibitors."

Sebastian Bach : 'Axl Rose Could Be Furious About Guns N Roses Album Leak'

Sebastian Bach, former frontman of Skid Row and friend of Axl Rose, says that the Guns N Roses singer could be furious about the leak of purported songs from the band's new album.

Last week, six songs that have appeared before in unfinished form and three songs - 'Rhiad and the Bedouins', 'If the World' and an unnamed track – appeared on a music blog.

The blogger who posted them claimed that they were due to appear on Guns N Roses long awaited new album 'Chinese Democracy'. All nine tracks have since been removed.

Speaking to Rolling Stone about the leak, Bach said that he has only seen Rose angry twice during their friendship – firstly, when he invited Ron Jeremy into the band's dressing room and, secondly, when he suggested the band release their new album.

“When we were first hanging out in 2006, we were just standing around a bunch of people. I go, ‘Axl, do you think you might get the record out? It would be a great time, now that we’re on tour and everything',” Back explained.

“He goes, ‘Oh. Great! Everybody! Sebastian has a great idea here, man. Guess what? Sebastian, should I put out a record?

“Maybe it would be a good idea for me to put out a fucking record! Hey everybody, listen to this! I never thought of that! That never came to me! Oh, great idea dude'.”

Production on 'Chinese Democracy', which was last scheduled for release in March 2007, originally began in 1994 and has cost the band's Rose a reported $13million.

Earlier this year, drinks company Dr Pepper promised each American citizen a free drink if the band released the album before the end of 2008.

Dragon Ash started out from small punk rock beginnings to get one of the brightest groups in the ontogeny New Japanese Rock movement in the late '90s, blending crop up sensibilities with a hard-edged heavy, producing albums and singles that play like a tour of Western stone of the '90s. Lead isaac Bashevis Singer and guitarist Kenji Furuya, word of actor Ikko Furuya, met drummer Makoto Sakurai when they were jr high gear students in a Tokyo suburbia, and the two started playing together. Though temporarily sidetracked into following in his father's footsteps, Furuya gave up the few acting gigs that he was getting on TV dramas to boil down on music in highschool school. In 1996, knowledgeable what they wanted only needing some sort of mentor, they took on basso player Ikuzo Baba, ten old age their senior. Furuya and Sakurai had the talent and drive -- Baba brought see and a wealth of melodious cognition. Dragon Ash was born. The mathematical group debuted in 1997 with two EPs at the beginning of the year, The Day Dragged On and Public Garden, which showed their raw, hood hardcore style, influenced by another rock trio, Nirvana. By the ending of the year and time of their release, Mustang!, the chemical group had progressed from their simple punk roots to a portmanteau of pop, blue funk, hardcore, rap, and metallic element. Through 1998 their popularity increased, and by the time of Buzz Songs, their sound had coagulated to rock/rap, helped with the mixture skills of DJ Bots, wHO once in a while appeared on some songs. Two singles -- "Allow Yourself Go, Let Myself Go" and "Grateful Days," the latter featuring hard-core knocker Zeebra and soulstress ACO -- sold so considerably that they chapped the Japanese Oricon charts, normally reserved for crop up music, and went to number one. Now Dragon Ash had suit a four-piece, with DJ Bots indispensable to the combine. Their third album, 1999's Viva voce la Revolution, non only signified the arrival of the isthmus as a major grouping in Japan, merely was nonpareil of the first volleys in the New Japanese Rock movement. In 2000, Dragon Ash undertook the Total Music Communication Tour, touring Japan with a lineup that included other rising rock acts of the Apostles, such as Missile Girl Scout, Penpals, and Skebou Kings. Meanwhile, Furuya and DJ Bots formed a couple of sorts, writing and producing songs for acts such as Sugar Soul below the key Steady & Co. Likewise, Baba and Sakurai sidelined as a remixing unit called Motor Headphone, popping up on diverse compilations. If anyone had whatever doubts that the group was softening around the edges, 2001's Lily of da Valley was as hard, funky, and uncompromising as their earliest sour.

Fans lash out after Radiohead show

D.C.-area concert turns away concertgoers

NASHVILLE -- Radiohead's rain-drenched May 11 sellout at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Va., has resulted in an Internet-driven firestorm, with message boards and the blogosphere lighting up amid fan frustration.
The D.C. market was faced with monsoonlike conditions around the show, with an estimated four inches of rain and flooding forcing road closures and maddening traffic conditions. Apparently a significant number of fans -- hundreds or thousands, depending on who is estimating -- were extremely late or unable to get into the show for a variety of reasons.
As such, many fans have taken to the Internet to vent their dissatisfaction, with neither the venue, the promoter nor the band being spared. One area blogger offers this headline: "Radiohead @ Nissan: You Both Suck."
Radiohead's Web site offers the following comment: "Due to Sunday night's torrential rain storm and consequential multiple road closures, many fans were unable to reach the Nissan Pavilion. While acknowledging a lack of control over the ensuing flooding and detours, the members of Radiohead are nevertheless disappointed regarding this turn of events. For further inquiries, ticket holders who didn't get in are urged to contact: customerservice@nissanpavilion.com."
Nissan Pavilion owner/operator Live Nation has offered fans that were turned away tickets to an Aug. 12 show at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, N.J. (near Philadelphia), or tickets to a show of their choice at Nissan Pavilion (subject to availability).
But that may not be enough to pacify some fans. One online petition with more than 350 signers calls for another Radiohead show in the market, with such comments as, "I would ABSOLUTELY want to attend another DC/Baltimore show -- as long as its not at Nissan!! The offer that Nissan provided me of free lawn tickets to the Camden, N.J., show is insulting! For one, I had pavilion seats. Two -- its Camden, NJ!!"
Adding fuel to the fire is Radiohead's self-stated intention of making its summer tour as environmentally friendly as possible. According to one fan post, "One-third of the concert-goers that night were driving around in circles, burning fossil fuels all the while. This is your save the Earth tour ... and yet you play in the middle of nowhere with no public transportation leading there. You owe us!"
And from another, "If you gave even one tiny llama turd about environmental impact, you would never have scheduled a show at a venue 40 miles away from downtown D.C., nowhere near public transportation of any kind."
Spokespersons for Nissan Pavilion and Live Nation had no comment.
